Can Couch Cleaning Remove Pet Odours?
Usually — but it depends on how fresh the accident was, the fabric, and how far it soaked in. Here's what actually happens.
Pet odour is one of the more common reasons people book a couch clean. It's a fair question whether cleaning actually removes it or just covers it up — the honest answer is: it depends on a few things.
Why the smell lingers
Urine contains uric acid, which crystallises and binds to fabric fibres. Bacteria break the rest down into the compounds that actually smell. Regular vacuuming lifts surface material but doesn't reach what's bonded into the fibres.
How a proper clean addresses it
- Extraction — hot-water extraction physically removes urine crystals, dander and residue rather than just masking them.
- Enzymatic treatment — enzyme-based cleaners break down uric acid and organic residue, typically needing 10–15 minutes of contact time.
- Deodorising — a deodorising step targets the odour molecules left after extraction.
What affects the result
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Fresh vs old | Fresh accidents lift far more easily than long-set ones |
| Surface vs soaked in | Urine that's reached the cushion padding needs more than a surface clean |
| Fabric type | Synthetics and leather tend to respond better than thick weaves like velvet or chenille |
When full removal isn't realistic
If urine has soaked into the cushion foam or a wooden frame, fabric-level cleaning alone often won't fully clear the smell — cushion replacement is sometimes the more realistic fix. We'll always give you a straight assessment rather than promise a result we can't back up.

Common questions about can couch cleaning remove pet odours?.
Will the stain come out completely?
We can't promise a specific result. What comes out depends on the fabric, how old the stain is, its condition, and any prior treatment. We'll give you an honest assessment before starting.
How do you decide which cleaning method to use?
We inspect the fabric and check the manufacturer's care code (W, S, WS or X) where one exists, then choose a method suited to that fabric — hot-water extraction, steam cleaning, low-moisture cleaning or a solvent-based approach.
Is steam cleaning the same as hot-water extraction?
Not exactly. Steam cleaning uses steam vapour, while hot-water extraction applies a solution and water then extracts it back out with the soil. Both are used across our services depending on the fabric.
Do you clean leather?
Yes. Leather is cleaned and, where suitable, conditioned using products matched to the leather finish rather than fabric cleaning products.
